Not by your problems. Roy Williams THE PRINCIPLES OF COACHING Doing sports or a physical activity usually involves having a coach or a leader . Before starting their activities, coaches must be aware of their great responsibilities, possess good technical and leading skills, and be knowledgeable of policies, laws, and procedures required to safely lead a group or team. Must-have of a good coach The levels of performance and the final results of an athlete or a team depend, to a great extent, on the ability of their coach to lead them properly. A good coach should have: a balanced personality and a good attitude towards the athlete or team. This may influence their motivational level. For example, an introvert coach may not be successful in strongly motivating a group or team; on the other hand, a coach who is too extrovert could become aggressive if the athlete or the team fails to reach the goals they set; the ability to build up relationships and to carry them on over time: coaches should be able to get in touch with each member of their group or team and maintain a good relationship all over the sporting season, even though the performances or results are not good; empathy: a coach should be empathetic, especially when performances do not meet the expectations; a lack of empathy could further demotivate the athletes about working on their weaknesses; good communication skills: a coach should be able to communicate important information correctly, in due time and in an appropriate way in order to be effective without hurting the athletes feelings; good organisational skills: being a coach involves not only planning activities such as training sessions and competitions, but also helping athletes follow a balanced diet and have the necessary periods of rest. Being unable to organise activities correctly and support athletes appropriately can have a negative effect on the final performances of the group; good knowledge of the sport performed by the athlete or team : it is important for the coach to be aware of the history and the techniques of a sport, as well as knowing the strengths and weaknesses of the competitors and of the problems that the athletes may have to face during training or competitions; knowledge of group dynamics: since group dynamics may prove an important element to reach goals in team sports, a good coach should know them in order to be able to build up cohesion and cooperation within the group.
