People PAOLO ROSSI Paolo Rossi (1956-2020) was an Italian footballer who played as a forward. He led Italy to the FIFA World Cup victory in 1982 by scoring six goals. For his performance he was awarded the Golden Boot as top scorer, and the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. Rossi is one of only three players, and the only European, to have won all three awards at a World Cup. In the same year, Rossi was also awarded the 1982 Ballon d Or for his performances, remaining the only player in history to win these four awards in a single year. Together with Roberto Baggio and Christian Vieri, he is Italy s top scorer in World Cup history, with nine goals overall. MICHAEL JORDAN Michael Jordan (1963-) is considered one of the best basketball players ever. His outstanding athleticism and competitiveness made him dominate the basketball scene from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s. Jordan won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls between 1991 and 1998 and was one of the most important players of the Dream Team, the American National basketball team who won the Gold Medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In his career, Jordan earned the NBA MVP Award in five regular seasons and three All-Star MVPs, becoming the most decorated player in the NBA. He has also become well-known among a wider audience after playing himself in the world-famous Space Jam cartoon film. MARTINA NAVRATILOVA The Czech tennis player Martina Navratilova (1956-) led her team to win the Federation Cup in 1975, when she was only 19. In order to continue her career, she had to escape from her country to go to the USA, where she got citizenship in 1981. By 1990, Navratilova had won the women s singles championships of the French Open twice, the Australian Open three times, the US Open four times and Wimbledon nine times, dominating the scene of women s tennis. In 1987, along with her singles championship, she won both the women s doubles and the mixed doubles to become the first triple-crown champion at the US Open since 1970. She retired from singles matches in 1994; however, in 2000, she returned to compete in the doubles event at several tournaments, including Wimbledon. In 2003 she won the mixed doubles at Wimbledon; with this victory, Navratilova, aged 46, became the oldest player to win at Wimbledon. She retired from competitive play in 2006. 36 TO PLAY
