REAL-LIFE SKILLS 15 GROUP WORK Follow the instructions. This activity will guide you in considering light and telling a story, just like a professional photographer would. The goal is to take five photos, each with a specific purpose. Step 1 Split up into small groups then choose a location: your school, a market, a street, a park, or even a room in your house. Step 2 The challenge is simple: take five photographs in the same location, each with a different purpose. Light and shadow: find an object or scene where light and shadow create a strong contrast. The goal is to show how light defines shapes and volumes. Detail: get close, take a photo that captures a small detail that most people would not notice, such as the texture of a leaf, a crack in a wall, or a reflection in a puddle. Emotion: look for a subject, expression, or scene that conveys an emotion, whether it be joy, melancholy, or curiosity. It doesn t have to be a face, it could just be an object in a particular context. Movement: freeze a moment of movement, or use it to create an artistic effect. Take a photo that shows action, whether it s a bird in flight, a person walking quickly, or a falling leaf. Composition: find a scene with lines, shapes, or colours that create a visually interesting composition. Here, the goal is pure aesthetics: the way the elements are arranged within your shot. Step 3 You will certainly have taken more than five photos but choose only one for each purpose. While reviewing them, ask yourselves how you achieved your goal for each shot and which photo you like best and why. Step 4 Decide how to present your photos in a coherent sequence, giving it a title. Step 5 Show the photos to the other groups and communicate your vision by explaining the story behind each shot and the sequence in general. PEOPLE AND INSTRUMENTS 275
