George V dies in 1936 and his eldest son David ascends the throne as King Edward VIII. A constitutional crisis arises with the new king over a potential marriage to the twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson. Edward, as supreme ruler of the Church of England, cannot marry her as both of her previous husbands are alive, so he abdicates. His brother Albert, reluctantly, ascends the throne with the name of George VI. He, however, is affected by a paralysing stutter which developed during his childhood and which had him considered as unfit to become a king. The King struggles with his handicap, a serious problem in an era when radio and public speeches are crucial tools of leadership and, against the wishes of the Archbishop of Canterbury, but encouraged by his wife Elizabeth, he entrusts himself to the care of an eccentric Australian speech therapist, Lionel Logue. Lionel, through a series of unusual techniques, helps the king find his voice again for a critical historical event: to entrust: affidarsi the first wartime radio reluctant: riluttante to struggle: combattere broadcast about Britain s stutter: balbuzie declaration of war on unfit: inadatto Germany in 1939.
