Argomento e obiettivi del testo
 It Works! è un corso di inglese tecnico per gli studenti dei corsi con indirizzo Elettronica, Elettrotecnica e Meccanica, con focus sulla Manutenzione e Assistenza Tecnica.
 
 I contenuti, veicolati attraverso testi di livelli di diversa complessità, vengono esplorati utilizzando le quattro abilità in modo omogeneo ed integrato. Il testo dà inoltre grande importanza alla pratica linguistica attraverso attività che agevolano la revisione e la ripetizione dei contenuti studiati, favorendone l'apprendimento e l'interiorizzazione.
 I brani offrono un assortimento di stili, registri e livelli di difficoltà, e sono tratti da fonti diverse ed autentiche: libri e manuali, riviste e quotidiani online e siti web, anche specialistici.
 
 Il testo si propone di:
 
 <ul><li>far acquisire le competenze necessarie per comprendere testi che presentano termini, espressioni, strutture sintattiche e modalità discorsive specifiche del linguaggio settoriale;
</li><li>migliorare le capacità di ricezione e produzione orale e scritta;
</li><li>consolidare abitudini grammaticali corrette;
</li><li>incoraggiare l'autonomia linguistica e la soluzione di problemi;
</li><li>stimolare l'interesse e la partecipazione attiva degli studenti, dando spazio alla loro esperienza personale e a problematiche di attualità.
</li></ul>La struttura
 It Works! è diviso in cinque Moduli, ognuno dei quali ripartito in un numero variabile di Unità.
 Ogni Unità è suddivisa in brevi Capitoli su due pagine – teoria ed esercizi – per favorire sia uno studio più parcellizzato, sia la scelta antologica da parte dell'insegnante.
 
 Brevi link (curiosità, ampliamenti, rimandi, attività o mini-approfondimenti) arricchiscono i brani per consentire una maggiore interattività. Il primo esercizio di ogni capitolo è sempre una mappa riepilogativa da completare che aiuta a focalizzarsi sulle key words e i contenuti chiavi del testo proposto.
 Un ricco apparato iconografico, infine, accompagna i brani di lettura, per ognuno dei quali è previsto un esauriente glossario.
 
 Ogni Unità si conclude con tre sezioni:

</li><li>Case study: argomento di attualità corredato di esercizi mirati all'approfondimento e alla discussione;
</li><li>Mapping your Mind: mappa riepilogativa per rappresentare la rete di relazioni tra i vari argomenti delle unità e a fissare le key words.

CASE STUDY DEADLY EXPLOSION AT HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT On 9th April, 2024, seven people died after an explosion at the hydroelectric power plant on Lake Suviana, seventy kilometres from the city of Bologna, in northern Italy.   The dam Lake Suviana is an artificial lake located in the Appennine mountain range near Bologna. The Suviana dam was built by the State Railways with the aim of producing electricity exploiting the waters of the lake, which still exists downstream of the dam, so that it could supply energy to the Bologna-Florence railway line. Construction started in 1928 and was completed in 1932. In 1975, the Italian energy giant Enel built the Bargi hydroelectric power station upstream, which is powered by the waters of the nearby Brasimone basin, connected to Lake Suviana by a pipeline. The power plants are now owned by Enel Green Power, a subsidiary of the Enel company.   The accident According to initial reconstructions, a generator exploded while work was underway on the turbines; the explosion occurred on floor nine, thirty metres below the surface of the lake, causing the floor below to become flooded. Besides the seven victims, five more people were seriously injured. They suffered severe burns following the explosion and were flown to nearby hospitals by helicopter, while two men were taken to an intensive care unit. The company expressed its deepest closeness to all the victims and their families.   Concerns about work safety What happened has risen concerns about workplace safety in Italy, where over 1,000 people lost their lives while working in the previous year. According to a report by the country s national workers  compensation authority, INAIL, the country s largest unions were already organising a nationwide strike to protest over the issue.
