Argomento e obiettivi del testo
 It Works! è un corso di inglese tecnico per gli studenti dei corsi con indirizzo Elettronica, Elettrotecnica e Meccanica, con focus sulla Manutenzione e Assistenza Tecnica.
 
 I contenuti, veicolati attraverso testi di livelli di diversa complessità, vengono esplorati utilizzando le quattro abilità in modo omogeneo ed integrato. Il testo dà inoltre grande importanza alla pratica linguistica attraverso attività che agevolano la revisione e la ripetizione dei contenuti studiati, favorendone l'apprendimento e l'interiorizzazione.
 I brani offrono un assortimento di stili, registri e livelli di difficoltà, e sono tratti da fonti diverse ed autentiche: libri e manuali, riviste e quotidiani online e siti web, anche specialistici.
 
 Il testo si propone di:
 
 <ul><li>far acquisire le competenze necessarie per comprendere testi che presentano termini, espressioni, strutture sintattiche e modalità discorsive specifiche del linguaggio settoriale;
</li><li>migliorare le capacità di ricezione e produzione orale e scritta;
</li><li>consolidare abitudini grammaticali corrette;
</li><li>incoraggiare l'autonomia linguistica e la soluzione di problemi;
</li><li>stimolare l'interesse e la partecipazione attiva degli studenti, dando spazio alla loro esperienza personale e a problematiche di attualità.
</li></ul>La struttura
 It Works! è diviso in cinque Moduli, ognuno dei quali ripartito in un numero variabile di Unità.
 Ogni Unità è suddivisa in brevi Capitoli su due pagine – teoria ed esercizi – per favorire sia uno studio più parcellizzato, sia la scelta antologica da parte dell'insegnante.
 
 Brevi link (curiosità, ampliamenti, rimandi, attività o mini-approfondimenti) arricchiscono i brani per consentire una maggiore interattività. Il primo esercizio di ogni capitolo è sempre una mappa riepilogativa da completare che aiuta a focalizzarsi sulle key words e i contenuti chiavi del testo proposto.
 Un ricco apparato iconografico, infine, accompagna i brani di lettura, per ognuno dei quali è previsto un esauriente glossario.
 
 Ogni Unità si conclude con tre sezioni:
 
 <ul><li>Vocabulary and Praseology: attività di revisione e consolidamento del lessico;
</li><li>Case study: argomento di attualità corredato di esercizi mirati all'approfondimento e alla discussione;
</li><li>Mapping your Mind: mappa riepilogativa per rappresentare la rete di relazioni tra i vari argomenti delle unità e a fissare le key words.
</li></ul>Alla fine di ogni Modulo, il testo propone ulteriori attività:

His neighbourhood has become full of gang violence and poor Asian immigrants, including Walt s nextdoor neighbours, the Vang Lor family. Fifteen-year-old Thao Vang Lor is forced to join an Asian gang led by his cousin  Spider  and to steal Walt s Ford Gran Torino as an initiation. Walt catches Thao and avoids the theft; Thao escapes after Walt nearly shoots him. When the gang tries to kidnap Thao, Walt scares them off with his rifle. As a punishment, Thao s mother makes him work for Walt, who gives him different tasks to improve the local neighbourhood. Walt becomes a mentor to Thao, helping him obtain a construction job. Walt also rescues Thao s sister, Sue, from the unwanted advances of three African-American gangsters. After the gang assaults Thao on his way home from to dig: scavare work, Walt does the haunted: same to a member perseguitato as a warning. As to kidnap: rapire rifle: fucile a result, the gang to shed: spargere beats Sue and then injures Thao. The family refuses to report the crimes for fear of reprisals. The following day, Thao seeks Walt s help to take revenge; Walt convinces him to return later that day. When Thao arrives, Walt takes him to his basement and gives him his war medal, telling him that he is haunted by the memory of killing an enemy child soldier that was trying to surrender to him and he wants to avoid Thao shedding any blood. He locks Thao in the basement and departs to the gang s residence. When Walt arrives, the gang draw their guns on him as he blames them for their crimes. Walt puts a cigarette in his mouth, slowly searches his jacket pocket and pulls his hand out quickly. Thinking Walt is taking out a gun, the gang members shoot and kill him. Walt s hand opens to reveal his lighter. Sue, following Walt s directions, frees Thao and they arrive at the scene. A police officer tells Thao and Sue that Walt was unarmed and that the gang members have been arrested for murder. The officer goes on to tell them that the gang members will be going to prison for a very long time thanks to the fact that witnesses have come forward. Walt s last will and testament is read after his funeral. Walt has left his house to the church and his Gran Torino to Thao, on the condition that Thao does not modify the car, which he then drives with Daisy at his side.
