Robert Louis Stevenson

The Black Arrow (1888) by Robert Louis Stevenson is a historical novel set during the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485). It is about the adventures of young Richard Shelton, who is looking for justice for his father’s murder. He fights the evil Sir Daniel Brackley (his guardian) to rescue the girl that he loves, Joanna Sedley, from him. He joins the “Black Arrow”, a band of outlaws who also fight against Sir Daniel. The reader is enriched with in-depth analyses about the Wars of the Roses, outlaws in the historical novel, the Middle Ages and England in the 15th century.

 The Black Arrow (1888) è un romanzo storico di R.L. Stevenson, ambientato durante la Guerra delle Due Rose (1455-1485). Racconta le avventure del giovane Richard Shelton, alla ricerca di giustizia per l’omicidio di suo padre. Combatte contro il corrotto e malvagio Sir Daniel Brackley (il suo tutore) per salvare da lui la sua amata, Joanna Sedley. Si unisce alla “Freccia Nera”, una banda di fuorilegge che combatte anch’essa contro Sir Daniel.

The Joanna BlackSedley Arrow Chapter 3 5  Now, the band of the Black Arrow are the real danger, not York,  Sir Daniel said to his men in Moat Castle.  We helped Lancaster but we lost the battle and a lot of soldiers died. But now we must make peace with York and support them.  Then, he asked Throgmorton, one of his best men, to take a message to the Yorkists1. After that, Sir Daniel went to the great hall with Sir Oliver to wait for Richard. When he arrived, Sir Daniel said,  Dick, strange voices say that you don t believe me but believe my enemies. Ask and I ll answer you.   First of all, I want to thank you and Sir Oliver for what you ve done for me,  Richard said.  But I d like to know how my father died. They say that you killed him.   Your father was my friend. And do you think that, after killing your father, I could take his son under my protection?   Sorry, Sir, but my father s death has allowed you to use all my money and plan my marriage.   How can you say these horrible things? Well, you re just a boy, that s why  Listen, Dick. I swear2 that I didn t kill your father!   All right, Sir Daniel, you didn t kill my father yourself  But what about Sir Oliver? They say that it was Sir Oliver who killed my father.   How can you have doubts3 about Sir Oliver, a man of the Church?!   Because the dog goes where the master orders,  Richard answered. Sir Daniel s face became red with anger4, while Sir Oliver s face became white with fear. Sir Daniel turned to the priest and shouted,  Sir Oliver will also swear. Come on, Sir Oliver, swear!  Sir Oliver, even whiter in his face, swore while he was shaking with fear. Looking at the priest, Richard understood that his doubts were true and that he was in great danger. When Richard went out of 1.
