The Author Robert Louis Stevenson LIFE Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 13th November, 1850. His father Thomas was an engineer. He was not a strong child and was often ill. When he had to stay in bed, he liked reading and listening to adventure stories very much. He studied to become an engineer as his father wanted, but he was interested in the art of writing. When he was at Edinburgh University, he started to live the life of an artist, interested in art, music and literature, with no rules1. Then, he went to France to cure2 his illness and there he met Fanny Osbourne; she was an American writer. She was already married and had two children. She divorced3 and they got married in 1880. As his health was still bad and he loved adventure, he went to the South Seas. He sailed4 from San Francisco to the Marquesas Islands. He also visited Tahiti, the Hawaii and the Samoan Islands. In the letters that he wrote to his friends, Stevenson described his adventures with great enthusiasm5. He also wrote a book: In the 1. rules: what you may, must or must not do in a particular situation. 2. cure: to make a person or an animal healthy again. 3. divorce: to end a marriage legally. 4. sailed: started a journey by boat or ship. 5. enthusiasm: a feeling of being excited.
