E X T E N S I O N CHRISTIAN LITERATURE Other important poems were The Seafarer1, The Ruin2, The Lament of Deor, The battle of Maldon and The Battle of Brunamburth. All these poems show a sense of sorrow3 for the brevity of life that the Anglo-Saxons called wyrd, word that means destiny or fate. With Christianity, Latin culture arrived and the Anglo-Saxons started producing works of remarkable4 quality for this period. Unfortunately only few of them have reached5 our age because the Viking invasions devastated the monastic libraries. The first Anglo-Saxon poetry created in England is essentially Christian. It is attributed to Caedmon, who lived about the middle of the 7th century. According to6 tradition he was a herdsman7 in the service of the convent of Whitby. Many of his poems are paraphrases of the Bible s stories.
