 Lemuel Gulliver recounts his travels to exotic lands: Lilliput, where he meets tiny beings; Brobdingnag, the country of the giants; Laputa, the flying island inhabited by scientists and philosophers; finally, he describes his encounter with rational horses, the Houyhnhnms, wise beings who live together with savages, the Yahoos, similar to men.

E X T E N S I O GULLIVER AT THE CINEMA Le Voyages de Gulliver à Lilliput et chez les géants (Gulliver s Travels Among the Lilliputians and the Giants) is the first film adaptation of Gulliver s Travels. It is a silent film, released in 1902 in France and 1903 in the US. It was directed by Georges Méliès. Gulliver Mickey is a black and white Mickey Mouse cartoon, produced by Walt Disney and released by United Artists in 1934. We find sequences of Gulliver s Travels and it ends with Mickey saving the town from a giant spider. The first successful film about Gulliver was an American Technicolor animated movie directed by Dave Fleischer and produced by Max Fleischer for Fleischer Studios. The film was released1 in 1939 by Paramount Pictures. It was a response to the success of Walt Disney s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs2. The story is based on the Lilliputian adventures of Gulliver. Paramount Pictures wanted Gulliver ready for Christmas.To meet this deadline3, the Fleischers had to employ4 lots of people. The next film with the same title was released in 1977, again in the US. It was directed by Peter R. Hunt. It was partly live-action and partly animated, and described Gulliver s meeting with the Lilliputians. 1. was released: came out. 2. dwarf: an extremely small person. 3. deadline: a point in time by which something must be done. 4. employ: give somebody a job for payment. 69 N
