PRESENT CONTINUOUS Il Present Simple esprime un azione abituale, ripetitiva ed è accompagnato dagli avverbi di frequenza e/o da espressioni di tempo quali: in the morning, twice a week, on Tuesday, ecc. Ben arriva sempre in ritardo! MODAL VERBS I verbi modali sono seguiti da un altro verbo di cui arricchiscono e completano il significato. I principali verbi modali sono: can/can t, could/couldn t (potere), must/mustn t (dovere). a) sono sempre seguiti dalla forma base del verbo senza to. I can swim. So nuotare. b) non prendono la -s alla 3a persona singolare del Presente. He can speak English. Sa parlare inglese. c) non usano gli ausiliari do/does/did nelle frasi interrogative, negative, interrogativo-negative. Can she cook? Sa cucinare? I couldn t swim when I was 3. Non sapevo nuotare a 3 anni. You mustn t eat so many sweets! Non devi mangiare tanti dolci! d) Hanno solo alcune forme (cfr. il riepilogo nelle pagine finali del testo).
