March of the penguins March of the Penguins is a real story of love and sacrifice. This French film is not a normal cartoon, but a nature documentary that was produced in 2005 and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It describes the journey that the emperor penguins of Antarctica do every year. In autumn all the penguins of five years and over leave the ocean to walk inland to their breeding grounds. where the ice is hard and thick enough to support the colony. There the males look for their partners, dancing and singing a special melody which is different for each couple, so that the two lovers can recognize each other at any moment! After the female has laid one egg, she transfers it to the feet of the male and she leaves to return to the sea and look for food for herself and her chick. Meanwhile, the males of the colony stand all together to protect the eggs and keep them warm, facing up to storms and freezing temperatures and without eating for about 60 days! The journey to and from the ocean of the females is very long and full of dangers but they do their best to come back in time to feed their chicks, otherwise they would certainly die. It took one year to shoot the film: the troupe had to face snow and the cold while looking after the colony without any rest or pause. However, they were able to record the moving and unique story of these penguins and to remind us once more how important it is to protect the environment and its inhabitants. 1 March of the Penguins is a A cartoon 4 The female passes her egg to the male because she B documentary film A must leave to look for another partner C fairy tale B must travel to the sea to feed herself C needs to feed herself and bring some 2 The penguins breeding grounds are A near the ocean B on thick icebergs C in the interior 3 The new couples of penguins recognize each other by food to her chick. 5 The males of the colony stand all together to A face the icy temperatures B protect themselves from storms C keep the egg warm A their songs 6 If the female doesn t come back in time the B their dance A chick can t survive C looking at each other B male dies of starvation C chick looks for another mother.
