3.1 Preservation and promotion World tourism organisations UNWTO The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is the United Nation’s specialised agency in charge of the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. Its main objectives include the support to the economic growth of developing countries, to peace and prosperity and to the observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms for all. It is committed to promoting tourism as an instrument in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) included in the UN Resolution called the 2030 Agenda. UNWTO’s membership includes 158 countries, six territories, two permanent observers (Holy See and Palestine) and over 500 affiliate members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities. Among the non-members are the UK, the US, Ireland and New Zealand. Founded in 1925 when the first congress of tourist organisations was held in Holland, in 1970 it turned into the World Tourism Organisation and was established in Madrid. In December 2003 the UNWTO changed its legal status to that of a specialised agency of the United Nations. IATA The IATA (International Air Traffic Association) was founded in Havana, Cuba, on 19 April 1945. It is an association of airlines promoting safe, reliable, secure and affordable air service for the benefit of the world’s consumers. Its key targets include reducing airline costs, ensuring environmental sustainability, improving safety and security, helping industry to restart after the 2020 stop due to the Coronavirus outbreak. IATA membership is open to airlines operating scheduled and non-scheduled air services, which must accept the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) Programme, an evaluation system designed to assess the operational management and control system of an airline. Nowadays IATA represents 290 airlines in 120 countries; its members include the world’s main passenger and cargo airlines. IATA members benefit from the promotion and support of their interests, the protection of the airline money, the reduction of costs and training in major fields such as passengers, cargo and safety.
