CLIP DOCUMENTARY BEFORE THE FLOOD PRODUCTION: US 2016 DIRECTOR: Fisher Stevens STARRING: Leonardo DiCaprio, Fisher Stevens, Trevor Davidoski, Jennifer Davisson, Brett Ratner, James Parker AWARDS: Hollywood Film Award SYNOPSIS The film is the product of a three-year journey through the globe to document the devastating impacts of climate change, questioning humanity’s ability to reverse the most catastrophic problem mankind has ever faced. It opens with a personal monologue by the environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio in which he talks about the “nightmarish” painting he used to have in his bedroom as a child: Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights depicting a twisted, decayed, burnt landscape characterised by “overpopulation, debauchery, exodus”. The documentary is named after the middle panel – Humankind before the Flood – which should act as an allegorical warning to the world. Following scientists on their expeditions, interviewing entrepreneurs and world leaders, participating to the Paris Climate Agreement (2016), DiCaprio underscores the importance of collective understanding, dialogue, awareness and education in catalysing environmental action. Recognising the influential role of the media in shaping public perception, draws attention to the impact of personal choices for the climate solution. To reduce carbon footprint the film suggests technological innovations which, however, need to be complemented by broader systemic changes, such as policy adjustments, economic incentives, and cultural shifts towards sustainability.
