REAL-LIFE SKILLS 4 Read the introduction and follow the instructions. The Historical Gardens on Lake Maggiore are: the English garden on Isola Madre, the Italian garden on Isola Bella, the gardens at Villa Taranto, and Villa Pallavicino, the Mediaeval gardens at La Rocca di Angera. A visit to these gardens has something to offer the tourist in any season of the year, but flowering time in one of its famous gardens really is worth a visit. Split up in small groups and search the Internet to find materials on the historical gardens of Lake Maggiore. Choose one of them and decide the main themes you will focus on: Step 1. historical context; relationship between the garden style and the concept of power and control on nature; main botanical and aesthetical features, as well as the best season to admire flowering or foliage. Each group discusses and organises a tour to a historical garden, considering the logistics of the visit. Include: Step 2. how long the visit will take; transfers by boat and/or by coach; accessibility to the area for disabled people; ticket prices for transport and entrance fees; special discounts, if any, for groups, children, students, over-65; cost estimated. Each group will assemble all information to produce a brochure to promote its own tour. Step 3. Isola Madre 5 Read the introduction and follow the instructions. Terroir refers to the relationship between the grape variety and the microclimate and soil characteristics of the soil in which it is grown. It determines the character and uniqueness of the wine. These are some of the most important Italian terroirs: Langhe, Conegliano e Valdobbiadene, Valpolicella classico e Soave, Chianti classico e Montalcino, Irpinia, Etna. Split into groups, search the Internet to collect information about the terroir you have chosen and create a leaflet with a map showing the relationship between the climatic factor, the soil, the grape variety and the characteristics of the wine produced in the area. Then compare your leaflet with the ones of your classmates.
