Argomento e obiettivi del testo
 
 Life Stages è un corso di inglese specialistico per il settore dei Servizi per la sanità e l’assistenza sociale.
 
 I contenuti sono ordinati secondo criteri di graduale complessità concettuale e linguistica e vengono esplorati utilizzando le quattro abilità in modo omogeneo e integrato.
 I brani offrono un assortimento di stili, registri e livelli di difficoltà, e sono tratti da fonti diverse ed autentiche: libri e manuali, riviste e quotidiani online e siti web, anche specialistici.
 
 Il testo si propone di:
 
 <ul><li>far acquisire le competenze necessarie per comprendere testi che presentano termini, espressioni, strutture sintattiche e modalità discorsive specifiche del linguaggio settoriale;
</li><li>migliorare le capacità di ricezione e produzione orale e scritta, anche tramite attività tipo Preliminary, FCE e IELTS;
</li><li>consolidare abitudini grammaticali corrette;
</li><li>incoraggiare l'autonomia linguistica e la soluzione di problemi;
</li><li>stimolare l'interesse e la partecipazione attiva degli studenti, dando spazio alla loro esperienza personale e a problematiche di attualità.
</li></ul>La struttura
 Life Stages è diviso in sette Moduli, ognuno dei quali ripartito in un numero variabile di Unità.
 Ogni Unità è suddivisa in brevi Capitoli su due pagine – teoria ed esercizi – per favorire sia uno studio più parcellizzato, sia la scelta antologica da parte dell'insegnante.
 
 Brevi link (curiosità, ampliamenti, rimandi, attività o mini-approfondimenti) arricchiscono i brani per consentire una maggiore interattività. Un ricco apparato iconografico correda i brani di lettura, per ognuno dei quali è previsto un esauriente glossario.
 
 Ogni Unità si conclude con due sezioni:
 
 <ul><li>Vocabulary: con specifiche attività di revisione e consolidamento del lessico;
</li><li>Mapping your Mind: mappa riepilogativa per rappresentare la rete di relazioni tra i vari argomenti dell'unità.
</li></ul>Alla fine di ogni Modulo, il testo propone ulteriori attività:
 
 <ul><li>Key people: persone influenti nell'ambito dell'argomento trattato;
</li><li>Case study: analisi di un evento, un'organizzazione o un problema specifico;

KEY People GRANVILLE STANLEY HALL Stanley Hall (1846-1924) was an American psychologist and educator, often called the  father of adolescence . He was the first president of the American Psychological Association (APA) and a pioneer in child and adolescent psychology. In his in uential work Adolescence (1904), Hall described this developmental stage as a period of  storm and stress , characterised by emotional turbulence and con ict. He believed adolescence was a crucial time for identity formation and psychological growth. Hall s work laid the foundation for future research in developmental psychology and significantly in uenced educational practices and the understanding of adolescent behaviour. BILL WILSON Commonly known as Bill W. (1895-1971), Wilson co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in 1935 along with Dr Bob Smith. Struggling with his own alcoholism, Wilson developed a spiritual program of recovery that became the foundation of AA. This program, outlined in the book Alcoholics Anonymous (also known as The Big Book), includes the famous  Twelve Steps , which provide a framework for individuals to achieve and maintain sobriety. Wilson s vision created a global fellowship that has helped millions of people overcome alcoholism through mutual support and shared experiences, emphasising anonymity, personal accountability, and spiritual growth. ROSS ELLIS Ross Ellis is an American leading expert and advocate in the field of bullying prevention and child safety. As the founder and CEO of STOMP Out Bullying, a national organisation dedicated to reducing and preventing bullying, cyberbullying, and other forms of abuse, Ellis has made significant contributions to raising awareness and providing support for victims. Her work includes developing educational programs, offering resources for parents and educators, and leading campaigns to promote a safer and more inclusive environment for children and teens. Ellis is recognised for her dedication to empowering young people and her efforts to create a culture of kindness and respect. 170 ADOLESCENTS 

CASE STUDY THE STORY OF KAREN CARPENTER   Who was Karen Carpenter? Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) passed away at age 32. The cause of death was heart failure, reportedly due to her struggle with anorexia nervosa. She was an American singer and drummer who formed half of the highly successful duo Carpenters with her older brother Richard. Her silky voice captured millions around the world: with a distinctive three-octave contralto range, she was praised for her vocal skills. But as time went on, her problem got the better of her. In the early 1980s, eating disorders were not fully understood and there were no effective treatments, so Karen did not receive appropriate support and eventually died.   Today Today, eating-disorder clinics help individuals recover every day. However, the stigma of what it means to suffer from such a disorder, 1 though being far less than it was in the 1970s and 1980s, still exists. Few people know why eating disorders develop, or how to get help for one, which is why it is important to continue talking about Karen Carpenter, her illness, and the many other girls that are still fighting it today. Karen s death marked the beginning of greater awareness about eating disorders and mental health. She kept her battle secret, but many younger female singers   such as Taylor Swift, Kesha, Halsey and Lady Gaga   now criticise that cultural idealisation of thinness. What contributed to Karen s isolation was the belief that anorexia was shameful and taboo. In 1987 her story was turned into a film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, an experimental biographical film that portrays the last 17 years of singer Karen Carpenter s life as she struggled with anorexia.
